An anchor is a heavy, metal device thrown overboard from a boat or ship by its crew. It opens up in the seabed when released and holds it fixedly there, preventing the vessel from drifting away due to wind or current. Crew members use an anchor to secure their position at sea safely during rest periods or emergencies.
